enrichment
Within the School we consider the intrinsic value of learning important and that education cannot be confined to the limits of examination specifications as it is a preparation for life in the broadest sense. Therefore we offer in the Sixth Form an Enrichment programme that runs parallel with the A-Level courses. It has seven aspects:
1. Sixth Form involvement in the life of the School.
• The School Six ( Elected to run various activities)
• Pupils’ Council (Organised by sixth-formers)
• Charity events
• Sixth Form Teaching Day (Sixth Formers as teachers)
• Sixth Form representation on Council
• Sixth Form representation on the Parent-Staff Committee
2. Preparation for life after King Alfred.
The following sessions/activities are devised and organised by Androulla Nicholas, the
School’s Careers Advisor.
• Work Experience
• Preparation for university. (UCAS)
• Interview practice
• Student life and finances
• GAP year safety advice
• Career Coaching
3. Wider Education
The following activities are offered as part of the sixth-form Enrichment programme:
• Peer Mentoring Training
• How to beat cyber bullying
• The philosophy of religion
• Coolhead and the Dragons’ Den (Economic awareness)
• Amnesty International
• Reading History
4. Subject-related foreign trips.
In recent years there have been Art trips to various European cities and cross-curricular
trips to America, Cuba and China. There are also language exchanges. Listed below
are the countries visited over the last year:
China - Tian Jiabing School, Liuyang, Hunan Province. School Partnership Student and Teacher exchanges. Internship Programme.
Cuba – Sixth Form Students: Cultural visit and study tour for senior students runs every 2 years. Visits to schools, factories, farming projects.
Spain – A-Level Geography students study volcanic landforms and urban renewal in Barcelona. Language trip to Valencia, Art and Music tours in southern cities, Grenada and Seville.
Sri – Lanka – Following the Asian Tsunami, we have purchased and are funding a Pre-School in a muslim village in the Tamil part of the island. Frequent visits by students, teachers, parents and friends of the school.
5. Adventure Sailing and Rowing. Ski Trips.
6. Duke of Edinburgh Award
The school participates in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, with students completing the Bronze and Silver awards. If you haven’t started the DofE scheme then the Sixth Form is a great time to gain formal recognition for any voluntary work that you offer to the wider community. It is appreciated where Sixth Formers assist in the preparation and running of expedition weekends when younger pupils benefit from the presence of older students. In addition Gap years are often a good opportunity to complete the Gold award and we will be pleased to help you in your preparation for this award, one which potential employers and universities look upon very favourably.
7. Working in the wider community.
This year we would like to introduce a new concept to Year 12 students that will involve all students either working in our school community or outside in the big wide world! This will take place in the Winter and Spring term and the expectation is that you will do a total of 40 hours over the two terms. Winter term – 10 x 2 hours each, beginning the week commencing 21st September 2009. Spring Term – 10 x 2 hours each week, beginning the week commencing 11th January 2010.
